Software Announce

by Sharon Housley

Creating amazing software is only half the battle. Telling the world about your software is the other half. With working capital, consider employing someone who specializes in software promotion. To work with an established reputable firm can esure success when marketing software. Two promotional companies that know the software industry, and can provide valuable marketing advice and insight are: Shareware Promotions – http://www.sharewarepromotions.com Dr File Finder http://www.drff.com .

Outside of hiring professionals to market software, there are still a number of options for marketing software, in most cases, the only investment will be time.

1. Post Press Releases to Online Resources If press releases or product announcements are sent out, consider posting the announcements to websites, there are a number that allow for press release posting free of charge. The releases on these sites are occasionally picked up by publications looking for information or filler content. Another side benefit to these listings is increased link popularity, which helps with search engine ranking. A list of sites that allow for press release posting can be found under ‘press release posting’ A number are available at – http://www.softwaremarketingresource.com/pressreleases.html

2. Post Announcement on Usenet A number of Usenet groups allow for posting of announcements or press releases. Most of the announce groups in Usenet contain ‘ann.’ in the domain address. To locate topic specific announce groups consider searching Newsguy.com. A list of common software announce groups are listed below. comp.software.shareware.announce fm.announce

3. Post to Forums Forums also contain sections in which you can post announcements. If the application is niche product, consider searching for topic specific forums in addition to the general software announce forums listed below. Be sure to post any announcements in the appropriately marked ‘announce forum’ http://www.small-business-software.net/forum/ http://forum.mypdacafe.com http://forums.digital-sea.com/ http://download.net/forums/index.php http://www.developers-forum.com/ http://v2.tlab404.com/forum

Topic specific software announce forums are also available, such as – http://www.messaging-software.com/forum – only messaging related announcements are welcome

4. Search Usenet To determine if there are recent inquiries regarding related software or your products and to post appropriate responses search Google’s Forum directory (by date): http://groups.google.com/

5. Present to Local User Groups User groups are filled with technically savvy individuals who have an interest in technology and software. Consider attending and presenting software at a local user group meeting or a SIG (special interest group). The targeted audience will often share information, about software that impresses them, with friends or other user groups. To find local user groups search the database located on the Association of Professional User Group (APCUG) website at http://www.apcug.org or post an inquiry to the user group forum on http://www.small-business-software.net/forum/

6. Partner with Other Developers Consider a developer newsletter exchange. Complimentary products often do well when presented properly. Provide a discount or affiliate exchange to sweeten the offer of a mention.

The extra effort expended to make potential customers aware of products can go a long way to ensure the success of a well designed application.

Computers are something I feel are a necessary bother. I know they can be a benefit for many things, and I do use the computer quite a bit. I sometimes feel they are a bother when I end up spending more time on them than I want to. And the shopping opportunities are pretty great as well. That brings me to one of the other bothers that I am faced with today; I need to decide which of the desk top computers I have narrowed my search down to. I have written a list of the things I need, my need list, and then on another list, all the things I would like to have.

It is computer search time again. My old home computer is running very slow, and it is not meeting all the new requirements my job is giving me. I hate starting the search because I know nothing about computers except what to do to get my job done or what I am taught by the company. My husband and the computer geeks at work have recommended that I get the pentium 4 desktop pc, and I am hoping that it will take care of all the problems I have been having, and maybe give me some support to move ahead. To tell the truth, I have tried it out, and really like it. But don’t tell my boss!

Testing Flyback Transformer-How to test and when to replace it

Posted in Uncategorized by admin Thursday October 30, 2008 at about 8:50 pm

Nowadays, more and more monitor comes in with flyback transformers problems. Testing flyback transformers are not difficult if you carefully follow the instruction. In many cases, the flyback transformer can become short circuit after using not more than 2 years. This is partly due to bad design and low quality materials used during manufactures flyback transformer. The question is what kind of problems can be found in a flyback transformer and how to test and when to replace it. Here is an explanation that will help you to identify many flyback transformer problems. There are nine common problems can be found in a flyback transformer. a) A shorted turned in the primary winding. b) An open or shorted internal capacitor in secondary section. c) Flyback Transformer becomes bulged or cracked. d) External arcing to ground. e) Internal arcing between windings. f) Shorted internal high voltage diode in secondary winding. g) Breakdown in focus / screen voltage divider causing blur display. h) Flyback Transformer breakdown at full operating voltage (breakdown when under load). i) Short circuit between primary and secondary winding.

Testing flyback transformer will be base on (a) and (b) since problem (c) is visible while problem (d) and (e) can be detected by hearing the arcing sound generated by the flyback transformer. Problem (f) can be checked with multimeter set to the highest range measured from anode to ABL pin while (g) can be solved by adding a new monitor blur buster (For 14′ & 15′ monitor only.) Problem (h) can only be tested by substituting a known good similar Flyback Transformer. Different monitor have different type of flyback transformer design. Problem (i) can be checked using an ohm meter measuring between primary and secondary winding. A shorted turned or open in secondary winding is very uncommon.

What type of symptoms will appear if there is a shorted turned in primary winding? a) No display (No high voltage). b) Power blink. c) B+ voltage drop. d) Horizontal output transistor will get very hot and later become shorted. e) Along B+ line components will spoilt. Example:- secondary diode UF5404 and B+ FET IRF630. f) Sometimes it will cause the power section to blow.

What type of symptoms will appear if a capacitor is open or shorted in a flyback transformer?

Capacitor shorted

a. No display (No high voltage). b. B+ voltage drop. c. Secondary diode (UF5404) will burned or shorted. d. Horizontal output transistor will get shorted. e. Power blink. f. Sometimes power section will blow, for example: Raffles 15 inch monitor. g. Power section shut down for example: Compaq V55, Samtron 4bi monitor. h. Sometimes the automatic brightness limiter (ABL) circuitry components will get burned. This circuit is usually located beside the flyback transformer. For example: LG520si

Capacitor open

a. High voltage shut down. b. Monitor will have ‘tic – tic’ sound. Sometimes the capacitor may measure O.K. but break down when under full operating voltage. c. Horizontal output transistor will blow in a few hours or days after you have replaced it. d. Sometimes it will cause intermittent “no display”. e. Distorted display i.e., the display will go in and out. f. It will cause horizontal output transistor to become shorted and blow the power section.

How to check if a primary winding is good or bad in a Flyback Transformer? a) By using a flyback/LOPT tester, this instrument identifies faults in primary winding by doing a ‘ring’ test. b) It can test the winding even with only one shorted turned. c) This meter is handy and easy to use. d) Just simply connect the probe to primary winding. e) The readout is a clear ‘bar graph’ display which show you if the flyback transformer primary winding is good or shorted. f) The LOPT Tester also can be used to check the CRT YOKE coil, B+ coil and switch mode power transformer winding.

NOTE: Measuring the resistance winding of a flyback transformer, yoke coil, B+ coil and SMPS winding using a multimeter can MISLEAD a technician into believing that a shorted winding is good. This can waste his precious time and time is money.

How to diagnose if the internal capacitor is open or shorted? By using a normal analog multimeter and a digital capacitance meter. A good capacitor have the range from 1.5 nanofarad to 3 nanofarad.* 1) First set your multimeter to X10K range. 2) Place your probe to anode and cold ground. 3) You must remove the anode cap in order to get a precise reading. 4) Cold ground means the monitor chassis ground. 5) If the needle of the multimeter shows a low ohms reading, this mean the internal capacitor is shorted. 6) If the needle does not move at all, this doesn’t mean that the capacitor is O.K. 7) You have to confirm this by using a digital capacitance meter which you can easily get one from local distributor. 8) If the reading from the digital capacitance meter shows 2.7nf, this mean the capacitor is within range (O.K.). 9) And if the reading showed 0.3nf, this mean the capacitor is open. 10) You have three options if the capacitor is open or shorted. – Install a new flyback transformer or – Send the flyback transformer for refurbishing or – Send the monitor back to customers after spending many hours and much effort on it.

* However certain monitors may have the value of 4.5nf, 6nf and 7.2nf. Note: Sometimes the internal capacitor pin is connected to circuits (feedback) instead of ground. Tv rca flyback transformer circuits usually do not have a internal capacitor in it. If you have a flyback diagram and circuits which you can get it from the net, that would be an advantage to easily understand how to check them.

How to Remove DRM from WMA – Is it Legal and Worth the Effort?

Posted in Uncategorized by admin Thursday October 30, 2008 at about 7:08 pm

Technically, it’s illegal to remove DRM from WMA protected music. Digital Rights Management (DRM) is part of the music industry’s effort to curb piracy. There are legitimate reasons for removing it, but first understand DRM can not be removed from file sharing network downloads. Most tracks can be legally copied 3 to 5 times, and this has been exceeded long before they appear on a peer-to-peer network. You must have either purchased the music or have unrestricted free music downloads.

There is no easy way to remove DRM, but it can be removed with some effort and know-how. The best advice is to only download music in the format you need, and that you have the right to copy to an mp3 player, CD or other device. It’s also important to determine that the player will recognize and play the DRM protected WMA track.

What if I Really Like the songs and Want to convert them?

Let’s say you’ve already downloaded music and need to convert to another audio codec. The common conversion method is to burn the tracks on a CD, then rip them in the desired codec’s format. Even this requires special ripping software and numerous steps because the DRM is still embedded in the tracks. And because codecs like WMA, mp3, OGG, AAC, etc. are lossy formats, the sound quality will be degraded.

Lossy formats selectively discard sounds the human ear can’t hear to make the file smaller. But each format removes slightly different sounds. For example, converting a track using a WMA to mp3 converter is now missing the sounds that both codecs have deleted.

There are other ways to remove DRM and convert WMA to mp3, but they require numerous steps and more software – and they’re not for the technically challenged. Free WMA to mp3 conversion software and detailed instructions are available on the Internet.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Elliptical Galaxies

Posted in Uncategorized by admin Monday October 27, 2008 at about 4:44 pm

Elliptical galaxies are ellipsoidal agglomerations of stars, which usually do not contain much interstellar matter, and look smoothly like small wads when viewed through a telescope.

Some disk galaxies without much structure can hardly be distinguished from elliptical galaxies and thus are sometimes misclassified.

Elliptical galaxies are unlike spiral galaxies and hence unlike our own Milky Way Galaxy.

Ellipti-what?

The most popularly used classification of galaxies is due to Hubble (1925) and according to this categorization, there are two major groups: the spiral and elliptical galaxies, but there are also lenticulars and irregulars.

Before hitchhiking to and through elliptical galaxies, one must first familiarize themselves with all the other types of galaxies.

Spiral coils in space

Spirals like our own galaxy, fall into several classes depending on their shape and the relative size of their bulge or how they curve.

Spiral galaxies are characterized by the presence of gas in the disk which means star formation remains active at the present time, hence the younger population of stars. Spirals are usually found in the low density galactic field where their delicate shape can avoid disruption by tidal forces from neighboring galaxies.

The egg in space

Ellipticals on the other hand are placed in sub categories depending on their degree of ellipticity. They have a uniform luminosity and are similar to the bulge in a spiral galaxy, but with no disk. The stars are old and there is no gas present. Ellipticals are usually found in the high density field, at the center of clusters.

Irregular Lentils

The last two other types of galaxies are called Lenticular and Irregular. Lenticulars also possess both a bulge and a disk, but they have no spiral arms. There is little or no gas and so all the stars are old. They also appear to be an intermediate. Irregulars on the other hand are small galaxies, with no bulge and an ill-defined shape. Spots in the universe

Galaxies are like islands in the Universe, made of stars as well as dust and gas clouds. They come in different sizes and shapes.

Galaxies are not only distinct in shape, they also vary in size: some may be as “light” as a stellar globular cluster in our Milky Way (i.e. they contain about the equivalent of a few million Suns) while others may be more massive than a million Suns.

Presently, more than half of the stars in the Universe are located in massive spheroidal galaxies.

One of the main open questions of modern astrophysics and cosmology is how and when galaxies formed and evolved starting from the primordial gas that filled the early Universe.

In the most popular current theory, galaxies in the local Universe are the result of a relatively slow process where small and less massive galaxies merge to gradually build up bigger and more massive galaxies.

In this scenario, dubbed “hierarchical merging”, the young Universe was populated by small galaxies with little mass, whereas the present Universe contains large, old and massive galaxies, the very last to form in the final stage of a slow assembling process.

If this scenario were true, then one should not be able to find massive elliptical galaxies in the young universe. Or, in other words, due to the finite speed of light, there should be no such massive galaxies very far from us. And indeed, until now no old elliptical galaxy was known beyond a radio-galaxy that was discovered almost ten years ago.

And so the mystery of the elliptical galaxy continues. Continue hitchhiking through galaxies to understand things better and whatever happens, remember not to panic.

Book Review: Origins of Modern Witchcraft

Origins of Modern Witchcraft: The Evolution of a World Religion
Author: Ann Moura
Trade Paperback, 336 pages
Publisher: Llewellyn
Publication date: October 2000
ISBN: 1567186483
More Information:

Given all the misinformation floating around the Neo-Pagan community about the origins of Wicca and other Neo-Pagan religions, I was pleased when the Origins of Modern Witchcraft arrived for review. Here was a book by the author one of the better recent series of “101″ books (Green Witchcraft I, II, and III). A book by an author with a masters in history. Unfortunately, my high hopes for this book were quickly dashed.

Origins of Modern Witchcraft is a readable and enjoyable romp through historical speculation. I enjoyed reading this book even as I picked it apart. Ann Moura has an engaging style of writing and the historical theory she presents is interesting. She is exploring the theory that there were two major ancient civilizations in Eurasia, the Sind in the Indus Valley and the Aryan invaders. The Sind were peaceful and advanced with a life-affirming God and Goddess while the Aryans were warlike invaders with angry, hostile Gods.

My first major problem with this book is the lack of footnotes. The author makes grand, sweeping claims throughout this book without providing much — if anything — to support them. For example, the author states that “the people of Sind understood the concepts of light years and the equivalent of modern astronomy’s ‘island universes’….” This is a remarkable claim, yet no support for it is provided. This volume is full of such remarkable claims, most unsupported.

My second major problem with this book is that it is very hostile to religions, beliefs, and practices it claims come from the Aryans. I got the impression from reading this book that those Aryan invaders were directly or indirectly responsible for every ill in Western and Near Eastern societies. While I suppose this is possible, it sounds more like scapegoating to me, especially given the lack of references.

Origins of Modern Witchcraft is unusual in one respect, at least for a history book; it includes a number of rituals. Each chapter has at least one ritual related to the material in the chapter. The rituals are well-designed and described, but seem a bit out of place in a history book.

I enjoyed reading this book (in the same way I enjoyed reading those outrageous “ancient astronaut” books when I was a teen), but was not convinced by it. It presents alternative, personal theory of history that seems designed to appeal to many Pagans, especially those who do not know much about ancient history. Without references to support all the amazing claims and statements made, however, the reader has no way to tell if this theory is likely or unlikely. Given the grand and sweeping nature of many of the claims made in this book, I personally have strong doubts about almost every claim made in the book. The author is basically saying that the history we are all taught is wrong. That is an outrageous claim to make without providing lots of references and other evidence to back the claim. Readers who prefer their history well-supported instead of declaratory will probably want to pass on this book as will those who prefer not to attempt to blame all the ills of history and the modern western world on one ancient people.

Somebody who’s been marketing on the Internet for several years how they like it and you’ll begin to see how animated someone can become.

The exciting world of Internet marketing, otherwise known as online marketing, has been making millionaires out of people who otherwise didn’t think they could reach these heights with such ease.

Although there is substantial work involved it’s more legwork and actual work in trying to figure out how to do it or how to generate money to do something. The Internet gives little guy leverage over the big companies so they are able to equally compete on a level playing ground.

I remember back in the old days when I had to come up with all different kinds of strategies in order to market something in a way that wouldn’t cost me my entire savings.

These days marketing something at low cost and maybe a little more of your time is much more reasonable using the online marketing strategies that have been proven by pioneers and experts alike.

I find the Internet marketing models are not only easy to follow,a lot more fun to execute, and more lucrative than the way we did it before, they’re also a lot less risky, and inexpensive.

Tips and tricks for online bet sports wager.

Granted that it admittedly can appear to be habit forming but, rather, sports betting is essentially simply diverting and of forging bonds with your fellow sports maniacs. You can risk a any negligible sum of dinero and yet enjoy an outstanding time. Looking further, here are many basic remarks to get started sports betting.

In order to bet, you will visit a sportsbook, which is a place that receives sportsbook. In the USA, there’s currently four states where you can go for sports betting in a lawful manner, but inofficially you can go for it essentially anywhere assuming that you can hunt out a bookie and you happen to be legally an adult. Punters can bet on the entire result of a game, when exactly a contester will be knocked out, and even whether a given tossed coin in a game will come down either heads or tails.

The betting outfit lean on statistics to aid you guess which sports club you feel is the likeliest to win. First, there’s the spread, in other words point leverage pertaining to a losing side presumed to take a licking by a specific number points. This is the sportsbook company’s calibrated methodology of offering disinterested bets for a sports book. By way of an example a customer might wager on a club presumed to take a licking and and yet make money on the bet assuming that the side actually loses by a specific number of points.
